About
So, last summer…
I was chosen as a pod artist (one of 48 out of 2000 applicants) to appear on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2024, Season 10, which just finished airing.
I had said that in 2024 I wanted to challenge myself in all aspects, and this really fit the bill! I don’t normally do cameras or film, and I was in an environment that was so removed from who I am as an artist: my approach to painting and even my style. As a contemporary painter and one who paints from intuition and from my own perspective it was certainly a challenge. Add to that a mainline train line with trains thundering past every 5min (stood 100m) from you; gale force winds (filming doesn’t show this) and being interrupted every 20min by full on film crew and interviews…. Well lets just say an experience.
What I quickly learnt is: I believe art/painting is more than place, I can use these experiences to educate myself and others, I can face fears, I can do a underpainting and not a finished painting under those conditions. I think it helped me find my place in the art world: I just want to paint and find a sustainable way of living from my practice thats all. Fame, glory etc…. Thats all distractions and false.
I was like a rabbit in the headlights! But my end painting certainly was true to me…. A cacophony of colour. ps I had never watched the program… it was free to enter that’s my only call@to@action
